ANTARCTIC METEORITE LOCATION AND MAPPING PROJECT (AMLAMP)
EXPLANATORY TEXT

Stewart Hills

During the 1991-1992 field season, the small icefields around Stewart Hills (84°12'S 086°00'W) were investigated during aircraft-based reconnaissance. The Stewart Hills are small, isolated nunataks located approximately 80 kilometers northeast of the Thiel Mountains and are only one of two bedrock exposures on the 1:250000 scale U.S.G.S. Stewart Hills quadrangle (STE39-Figure 1 - 39 KB JPEG).

Searches across the bare ice areas yielded no meteorites. However, one specimen, STE 91800, was discovered lying in an ice-cored moraine at the base of a talus slope at the NE face of the nunatak. STE39-Figure 2 (34 KB JPEG) is an oblique aerial photo of the Stewart Hills indicating the location of this specimen.

Acknowledgments; John Schutt and Peter Wasilewski conducted the field work in the 1991-1992 season. The support of the Twin Otter aircraft crew, J.C. Armstrong, Henry Perk, and Clarke Boutin, of Kenn Borek Air, Ltd. is much appreciated.
